Bill the crazy bee keeper!

This week in nursery we had a crazy bee keeper called Bill burst in and tell us he lost all of his bees!! Nursery could not believe their eyes! We helped Bill search our entire nursery to find all of his bees. We eventually found all of them but wanted to know why Bill had lost them in the first place!? Bill told us a story all about the sleepy bumble bee. We decided that the bees had flew away because they just couldn't sleep! After this we were inspired! We wanted to write notes to Bill to ask him question and give him advice on how to look after his bees! We then looked up bees on the big screen and used our observations to create our own representations.

We transferred all of our bee learning into our play where we pretending to buzz around like bumble bees and hunt for them outside in the garden. We cannot wait to discover more about bees when we return after the holidays!

We also had fun making Easter cakes this week! We watched our teachers model how to make the cakes first before going off and trying independently! We followed our instructions well and supported each other. Of course we had to test our creations along way to make sure they tasted great!

On Friday a very kind parent gave us a guitar! It was the best thing ever! We loved exploring all the different sounds we could create with our guitar and we spent all morning making a stage and somewhere for our audience to sit before performing our own songs. We especially loved performing our new bee nursery rhyme that we learned this week!

Have a beeutiful Easter break!!

The sleepy bumblebee!

On Monday morning we had such a surprise when we arrived at school to find Mrs Mackenzie fast asleep! We were very quiet so we would not wake her. We predicted what had caused her to have such a bad sleep. Some children thought it was because some owls were hooting outside of her window. Stef thought it might be because there was a party next door and they were playing loud music and popping balloons. Rose suggested that it could have been 'wild winds howling' such wonderful description. We woke her up and she read us the story 'Peace at Last' all about a daddy bear who couldn't get any sleep!
Later that day we found two bees that had escaped! We wrote the beekeeper a letter to come and collect them...
Bill the beekeeper turned up and told us the story about 'The Sleepy Bumblebee'
We are finding out all about bees! We discovered that bees create honeycomb in the shape of Hexagons! We found out about other sorts of shapes including pentagons and decagons!
We explored the book 'Snail Trail' where the snail takes us on a journey around different pieces of contemporary art. This promoted a fantastic discussion! We challenged ourselves to create a piece of artwork just like Henri Matisse's 'The Snail'.
We shall continue our learning around 'The Sleepy Bumblebee' next week where we shall write our own poem about a bee and create a piece of artwork of a bee in the style of Matisse, we shall continue to learn about 2d and 3d shapes and much more!

The great outdoors

This week at nursery we have loved the outdoors! We noticed that loads of birds were flying over our nursery, we were very intrigued to find out more asking lots of questions about what birds they were, where they came from, where they live and what they eat! After our discussion we decided it would be a kind thing to make the birds some food and place it in our bird feeder. We threaded some cereal onto pipe cleaners and attached them onto our feeder, we were very excited to come in the next day and see if any birds had eaten any of them!

We also went on an Easter egg hunt! Easter bunny came to visit us and told us that there were lots of eggs hidden around our field so we went on a hunt! We were all so excited and found lots of eggs we shared them out and then exchange them for a real chocolate egg!!

We also had a bounce on the bouncy castle!! It was so much fun!! We took our turns well and had a blast bouncing with our friends and teachers too!

Is it a real hamster!?

This week in nursery we gained a pet hamster (a fluffy bobble that fell of off someones hat!) We were amazed by this little creature and showed great empathy straight away. Some of us worried that she was cold or hungry, so we decided to build her a bed. We located a basket and decorated a box as a team. We then found her a cup of water and some toys to play with. After this we couldn't decide whether it was a pet girl or boy so we had a vote! We voted fairly using our tally charts and concluded it was a girl! We then brainstormed different name choices and we will pull one out of a hat next week to choose a name for our new pet!

We also made jelly this week, some of us had observed that our legs felt like jelly after running or spending a long time on our bikes. We started to do a wibble wobble jelly dance. This got a few of us talking about how jelly is made and we had a debate over whether jelly needed cooking. We soon solved our debate by making our own jelly and following the instructions on the packet!

We also showed a lot of interest in space and aliens this week, discussing our alien pictures and describing our buildings as space ships! Some of us even made rockets out of the junk modelling. i cannot wait to see what more you want to learn about space next week!

What do you need to bake a cake?

This week in nursery we had lots of fun baking cakes! It was 2 chidren's birthdays this week and we were really interested in how the cake was made that we were eating. We discussed what ingredients we might need and what method we would use. We made our very own and they were the best out of all the cakes we tried this week!

We also enjoyed creating our own butterflies after reading the very hungry caterpillar, we discussed what symmetrical meant and tried out creating our own symmetrical patterns. From this some of us thought it would be fun to cut up the paper with scissors, we were so interested in this that we continued getting more paper and more scissors and all had a go at using our scissor skills to cut spirals, circles and squares!

We have been enjoyed continuing to share our favourite books and some of us have become very confidence in performing our own stories on our own taped out stage. We have told Miss Brown a million stories this week and realised that they can all be written down! We had a go at helicopter as well and absolutely loved acting out our stories with our friends!!

Stories, stories and more stories

This week in nursery it snowed! We loved exploring the snow and the different marks we could make in it. The first thing we noticed were our bike tracks! We loved investigating our own marks and then one of us suggested a snow angel! Some of us didn't know what snow angels were so our friend demonstrated and gave us instructions on how to create one, we found this hilarious!! After this we enjoyed making ourselves a lovely hot chocolate to warm us up.

It was also world book day this week where we dressed up as our favourite story characters. We have been enjoying our hungry caterpillar story this week and created our own story map to learn. We loved acting our story out with all of the pieces and especially loved looking closely at the cocoon and hatching out the beautiful butterfly! We then came up with a beautiful butterfly dance where we created our own music with our instruments and danced how we thought a butterfly would.

We love stories they are amazing we get so immersed into the story line and enjoy acting them out, recreating them, designing them on paper and creating our very own. There is so much you can do with stories!
